The big ruffled flowers of series such as Voyage, Celeb, and Corelli tend to hold rainwater more easily than varieties with open centers and smoother petals. It also comes in blue and purple shades, which have long eluded rose breeders. BH: Can someone confirm that they see this? Your last spring frost date is an important benchmark in your season. Drench plugs with a biofungicide (Rootshield, Actinovate, PreFence, etc.) Cut them uniformly across the bed. I ordered some OMRI listed Rootshield to apply for algae control. Looks like it died, looks like maybe it didn't get enough water. It's the same price as 2007 and not much higher than 2005. Have a question or comment? 128's are slightly larger and slightly older than 216's, but I see little difference in the end result when either size are planted out at the same time. I am also known as Farmer Bailey. It also just gives me a bigger, easier to handle transplant a little later in the season. Wild Lisianthus often grows in sandy conditions, whereas I have grown it on amended heavy clay for years with good results. I'm sure I'll talk about that organization in a bit as well. We all recall the "early bloomers" in school when we were in our adolescent years and this is a good analogy. But if you're selling into a premium florist market, I recommend not pinching because you're just going to get bigger stems. Irrigate as needed, keeping the soil slightly moist. In terms of spacing, I like 8 plants per square foot, so if you're using the standard support netting that we can get in the US, it was about 6 inch by 6 inch squares. I bottom water every other day, sometimes even every third day. Very close to Canada. While I'm on that topic, if you ever see a disease plant and you're a production grower, get that plant to your university plant pathologist. There's a bunch of different whites, and they'll look pretty white to me. Series like Voyage, Corelli, Celeb, Megalo. Why wouldn't you want to grow that? That will give you more and smaller stems. FD: OK, here's a good one. The lisanthus plugs I ordered are "210" size. Those big ruffly flowers can just take on a lot of water if you have live in a rainy place. The LP32 plant palette contains species with lateral root systems and are generally more fibrous and shallowly rooted species. I think Vermont compost has some donkey manure and chicken manure in it as well as, you know, municipal compost. I would pull that plant out. This tells me that we need to make sure Lisianthus has plenty of water when it is young, and then can be less concerned with watering as the season progresses, assuming there is at least some moisture in the deeper parts of our soil. These are Lisianthus in the Westlands, Netherlands. I started the first lisianthus seeds today, per instructions online and on their seed packets. I mean they are perennials in the wild, but they're short-lived perennials. Every state has a land grant university, and should have a plant pathologist on staff, funded by your tax dollars. Garden Centers. And then afterwards people thought that I knew something they didn't, so I kept getting all kinds of requests for new products. But they, well, probably would not meet the requirements of organic certifiers. Most of the instructions I am finding online are similar. Most people aren't going to do this, but at the very least pinch out your first bud. I would also pull around - pull out those other eight plants near that plant because it may have already spread to those. That was a popular question. Transplant within 1 week of arrival, or bump up into 50 or 72 cell trays if immediate transplanting is not possible. So, thank you all for your support. Once the seeds germinate, remove them from the heat matt. Now if you are in a place like parts of Kentucky, maybe Zone 7 and warmer that might live through one year and bloom the following year, but it's tying up a lot of space, probably in your high tunnel. You will see some, if you ever have a flower, that pops its head off, that's because it probably didn't have uniform watering in its life. It's usually free or low cost. Our attention to detail is what sets us apart. That's wonderful. I think maybe I'm just repeating what I just said. It kind of shrinks back around it and I really maybe only had to weed once per season, and that was only every five feet would I find a single weed. It helps me keep my varieties straight. To start-- these are not scientific trials sponsored by seed companies or anything like that. Even these are not foolproof, but they do offer some level of protection. AS: Awesome, can you talk to us a little bit about feeding, especially for in Kentucky where we can get that second flush. There's a grower that grows 60 million stems a week. You will be offered a substitution or a refund if an item you ordered becomes unavailable. If you do not pinch you will get fewer but larger stems. I don't pinch, but if you do pinch you'll get branching. If you haven't tried to grow Lisianthus from seed, I encourage you to try it. Now with all fungal diseases, airflow is key. I don't know that any studies have been done in terms of which varieties respond better. So just raise, you know, put, like I said, use two layers, start them at the ground level. The middle of beds have the poorest airflow and humidity tends to accumulate more in the middle of a bed. I recommend using 2 layers of support netting with Lisianthus. Also, if you order more than 30 trays at a time, you can get pallet delivery and that's great because pallets don't tip over in transit. The wild ones are single petaled, but they've started breeding these ruffled single petals and all different colors here. The next step is to drop the temperature from 75-80F degrees down to 60-7F degrees. Lisianthus can handle cold. OK, so lisianthus has a bad reputation for being difficult, but it's really only difficult when you are growing it from seed. My only tip would be if you're going to pinch, you can plant them a little further apart, because when thatplant branches out from the base, you're going to get four or five stems coming up rather than the one, so you want to give it a little more room so they don't become too congested. Large seeds tend to produce plants that grow quickly (think of sunflowers or pumpkins) whereas tiny seeds tend to need a long time to build up strength. If you do a Google search for SakataCulture Sheet or Sakata production tutorial, you'll find a really in-depth document that I recommend you check out. So, they're really great for boutonniere work especially. Everyone's conditions are different, but just remember that cool start requirement and ample water in the early weeks and you'll be safe. Based on lead time, ship dates for a particular variety will be removed from the store once it reaches its sow date. Now those of us who have been growing way up north in Vermont, and you know, Minnesota, the Northern Tier, you can transplant as late as July, and then you'll have blooms in October. So like I said, these growers in Holland are producing 60 million stems per farm, and there's dozens of similar farms. There are a few items (Scoop Scabiosa, Chocolate Cosmos, Geum, Veronica, etc.) I went there in 2019 specifically to track these down and not to pat myself on the back, but the only reason we have them in the US is because I went over there and begged and pleaded that they share seeds with us. Cool, do you use manure on your lisianthus? Now again, if you have a market for really short stems, you can let that first flower open, cut it out, use it. Keep them mostly above 20, leave them in place. So, I have my degree in horticulture from the University of Kentucky and then I've worked as a floral designer for a long time, so I know how to grow things and I know what to do with the things afterwards, but I was missing this critical little bit of information in between, like how you support it, how you space it, how you fertilize it, and I got all of that from the ASCFG. You can't quite see anything in there because of the fog. Liset, the farmer running the stand, started flower farming in 2019 and has expanded to growing veggies as well. You see even things like astilbe do fine out in the full sun because it is so cool and lots of moisture usually. If you have 10 buds and you remove half of them, those remaining five are going to be bigger in the end because you're not putting all the resources into all the buds, so regardless of your approach, that first flower will not be useful by the time the next layer of buds is open. This is why so many of us rely on plugs rather than growing our own Lisianthus from seed. A friend of mine planted some in July in Tennessee and every one of them rosetted. All those good things. Vase life is very good in plain water as well. The difference has more to do with the flower shape and structure than anything else. It wasn't good for her. Usually in the moist prairies and along streamsides that might get dry in the summer, but they put down really deep roots so they can always find that moisture in their native environment. And then kind of as a last-ditch effort around your last frost, try some 3s and 4s and, you know, give them some shade. They're a plug grower in eastern Pennsylvania and they agreed to grow just one year, just kind of a group order for me and some friends, mostly that I met on Facebook, and other growers through the ASCFG. You will appreciate your plugs more than ever! Place plant trays on benches and water thoroughly with plain water (no fertilizer); be sure that plugs on the edges of the trays are thoroughly watered. I do this in Vermont just because usually we're waiting for snow to melt and we want something to do. They'll give you much better results than not treating if you have problems with these fungi. Update: January 25: We started to see the very first tiny little lisianthus sprouts in the tray on the heat mat this morning. The majority of the new perennials, along with all lisianthus, are being sourced from FB. So just remember to plant in the spring. The next question is you'd have to findan organic plug grower. Now is a great time to start thinking about what lisianthus plugs you want to order for next year! If you're using conventional food right after you cut, and you if you're going for that second bloom, that's a great time to give him a nice boost and nitrogen to get that vegetative growth coming back.
